Voices unite for change
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Reverend David Crapnell said, "Tonight, we're forging a new political landscape."
It's a historic meeting of four powerful grassroots organizations.
They hope the power of their united voice will bring about change.
Ava White of Voice Buffalo explained, "So it's kind of unheard of that all of these different entities will come together and be so diverse, yet come together on common ground for the good of all."
And their issues are as diverse as their backgrounds.
From revitalizing the Buffalo-Niagara economy, to improving hiring, to securing green housing and perhaps most importantly, improving local transportation.
They want to connect communities and remove barriers.
Gladys Gifford of the Transportation Task Force of Voice Buffalo stated, "The lack of good service in certain areas, not all. And of course the issue of bus shelters, folks would like to have more bus shelters in more strategic places."
Hal Morse of the Regional Transportation Council said, "Clearly the ability to access our community, people to jobs, people to services. Stronger communities and a better economy."
North Buffalo resident, Katelin Reiman believes the lack of access to the suburbs limits many people's economic opportunities.
"It prohibits me from even thinking about jobs out there because I can't get there," she said.
Community leaders believe the economic survival of Erie and Niagara counties is tied together and elected leaders need to start thinking that way.
"I've been living here six years and I haven't seen little to no progess. Hoping we can empower here to bring things into the city and into Buffalo," said James Brown.
Annual Worship Service - Sunday, November 18th VOICE-Buffalo held its Annual Worship Service on Sunday, November 18th at 4:00 PM at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Delaware and North, in the City of Buffalo. The theme of the service as based on Micah 6:8 where the prophet says: “God has told you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” As you may know, VOICE-Buffalo is an organization of more than twenty churches and religious communities which have come together to improve the quality of life in WNY. We have worked together to educate the community on the high cost of urban sprawl, to improve the economic viability of neighborhoods like the Genesee St. Project, to tear down dilapidated and dangerous housing, to provide after school programs, and to reduce violence on the West Side. In our area, the Healthy Strides community program last spring was the direct result of the work of Voice-Buffalo.
